If we have the following topology of a network:

multimedia servers --- Core network --- Aggregation network --- Access network --- users

The aggregation and access network are switched (no routers).

What are the requirements for these switches in order to be supported multicast for IPTV ?

When I say requirements I mean protocols or features. The only one I know is they need IGMP Snooping.

If the multicast is over IPv4, you need IGMP. Bear in mind your IPTV setup may need IGMPv3 for some features, and you need to make sure it's available on your switching gear. If you're using IPv6 to distribute IPTV, you'll need MLD.

Next, multicast transport usually requires good QoS for servicing IPTV, if it's shared infrastructure (internet connectivity is also going over this network), which would mean QoS features need to be present and working. This is the place that usually breaks - QoS is either on the paper, or not working according to spec. There are mysterious drops, and so on.

For L2 domain, if that's what you have from core towards the users, you also need to make sure the L2 config is solid - Spanning Tree is working, converges fast and in predictable manner.

You also need to know the bitrate & codec you're going to be using as well as the buffers on the switch at a port or port-group level. Depending on the codec - you could have microburts which could over-saturate the buffer or even the uplinks to your core. – knotseh May 11 '14 at 17:40
