I've been battling with my IPSec configuration for some days (with foolish deadline looming) and would like to ask for help with it failing its initial connection.

It's designed as client-to-router spokes with Cisco router at the centre, various devices (eventually) as the spokes.

  • Key exchange appears to work
  • Connection fails with %CRYPTO-4-IKMP_BAD_MESSAGE: IKE message from 1.2.3.22 failed its sanity check or is malformed
  • Retransmission and doom thereafter
  • UDP ports 500 and 4500 known to traverse network

The goal is to get client attached under R3 with IP traffic to server.

The transport network looks like this:

      client
  • client is an iphone on wifi under very conventional hotel/office-style NAT network under R1 (sanitised to 1.2.3.22)
  • R2 (sanitised to 2.3.4.30) is doing NAT with port forwarding to R3
  • R3 debug and monitor capture
  • U1 and U2 convenient Unix hosts for verifying packet transfer etc

Answering my own question: the solution was:

  • Use the correct group name in the client config (VPN_CLIENTS in example)
  • Use the group's key (secret3) in the client, not the main key (secret2) (latter appears to be extraneous, comment welcome)
  • Use less noisy debugging (debug crypto ipsec) to identify hash and transform incompatibilities
  • Get the exact right hashes etc.

Then get the policies and transforms right for this client, by reading the failures is good detail, and then reading them again.

Solution worked identically for "Cisco IPSec" VPN on a Macintosh running OSX 10.13.

Client changes

  • Account vpnuser
  • Password secret1
  • Group Name VPN_CLIENTS
  • Secret secret3

R3 changes

crypto isakmp policy 10
 encr aes 256
 hash sha512
 authentication pre-share
 group 14

crypto ipsec transform-set TS esp-aes 256 esp-sha-hmac

Routes

You've obviously got to get a route from server to client, such as adding on R2:

ip route 172.29.30.0 255.255.255.0 172.30.20.252

Additionally, added reverse-route to R3's group, though it's not clear to me if this is necessary and the exact interactions with the ACL. (Comments welcome).

crypto dynamic-map VPNDYNAMIC 10
 ...
 reverse-route

Many thanks for the errors and debugging messages shown here: https://zeeshannetwork.wordpress.com/2016/12/04/ipsec-part-vii-common-issues-in-phase2/
