I am trying to configure DHCP Server on a Cisco 2960-X switch to achieve port-based address allocation. I would like the IP address assigned to any device connected to that port to be the same every time.

I have used the following guide to achieve this: Configuring DHCP Features and IP Source Guard

The commands used are explained in detail here: Cisco IOS IP Addressing Services Command Reference

I have also tried various iterations of the following command to find something that works: address ip-address client-id string [ascii]

What I am not sure about is the string after client-id. Does it have to match your interface name? If not how does the DHCP server know which interface to relate the assigned IP address.

Here's my running-config:

otg#show vlan

Above we can see that the client id received by dhcp is off by 32 from what we reserved. address 192.168.100.5 client-id Gi1/0/2 ascii

Please advise on what I might be doing wrong. Would appreciate your help.

  • Typically, you don't enclose a string in quotes on IOS.

  • I didnt enclose it in quotes when setting up in config but when displayed in running config it shows up with quotes. Also I realized if I didnt use quotes I cant leave a space. So I tried various combinations as follows: Jan 4, 2016 at 20:53
  • If you read the debug messages it says received from client on VLAN 1 interface but shouldnt it be saying from GigabitEthernet1/0/x interface. Basically the port interface? This really confuses me. I am not sure what is wrong in my configuration. But it should work on the switch I have. Jan 4, 2016 at 20:55
  • The example shows, ip dhcp relay information policy removal pad, but you don't have that.

  • Yes I saw that too but that command is not accepted. It will let me do ip dhcp relay information policy replace but not the one mentioned in the document so i skipped it. Jan 4, 2016 at 21:13

Finally solved the problem!! So I was facing problem due to loss of information in the dhcp binding table. In short the subscriber id automatically generated would not match my reservations. Here are some examples:

port# interface received SID(hex) expected SID(hex)
2 Gi1/0/2 0047-6931-2f30-2f 0047-6931-2f30-2f32
13 Gi1/0/13 0047-6931-2f30-2f31 0047-6931-2f30-2f31-33
24 Gi1/0/24 0047-6931-2f30-2f32 0047-6931-2f30-2f32-34

I was hitting IOS bug present in some 15.0 releases. I updated my ios to 15.2 and problem solved! Thank you for all your help.

ip dhcp subscriber-id interface-name

Automatically generate a subscriber identifier based on the short name of the interface. A subscriber identifier configured on a specific interface takes precedence over this command.

The keyword here is short name. In the example, "Et1/0". So, "Ge1/0/4", etc. Yes, it's case sensitive.

  • Hi thanks for your response. I know there is something wrong with the subscriber-id I am using. In the command
address 10.224.5.200 client-id "Gi1/0/4" ascii
. What should i use as the string after client-id for Eg: GigabitEthernet1/0/4. I have tried various combinations but cant seem to get it right. Any thoughts? Jan 5, 2016 at 14:56

Let my show you my confing, this is working. You need tree thinks to work it corrert:

1: ip dhcp use subscriber-id client-id

2: ip dhcp pool Printers network 10.224.5.0 255.255.255.0 default-router 10.224.5.1 reserved-only address 10.224.5.200 client-id "Fa0/37" ascii address 10.224.5.201 client-id "Fa0/38" ascii address 10.224.5.202 client-id "Fa0/39" ascii address 10.224.5.203 client-id "Fa0/40" ascii address 10.224.5.204 client-id "Fa0/41" ascii address 10.224.5.205 client-id "Fa0/42" ascii address 10.224.5.206 client-id "Fa0/43" ascii

and the most important is to have a virtal interface with IP address:

3:
interface Vlan140 ip address 10.224.5.254 255.255.255.0 no ip route-cache

  • Hi I tried the setting you suggested but I still have the same error.. I thing you missed the following line
ip dhcp subscriber-id interface-name
also do i have to go to each of the port interfaces and use
switchport mode access
then
switchport access vlan 140
Finally i think what i am getting wrong is the short name for my interface. I have tried so many combination but cant get it right. GigabitEthernet1/0/4 would be? Gi1/0/4, G1/0/4, Ge1/0/4. Please advise. Jan 5, 2016 at 14:47
  • When you get a chance could you please share your running config with me so i can see if there are any additional seetings which are missing in mine. Jan 5, 2016 at 20:40
  • This is the right, you need to write this: Gi1/0/4. sure i can but first try this if you have more virtual interfaces then add this line qith the default GW address: ip default-gateway 10.xxx.xxx.xxx Jan 6, 2016 at 7:31
  • First of all check this after you implemented the config: - Do you have created the VLAN in your device? - Is the physical port in this VLAN Jan 6, 2016 at 7:39
  • Firstly thank you so much for your help. Truly appreciate it. I added the default-gateway just like you suggested and I made sure the new vlan exists and the port is a part of it. Also I used the interface short name Gi1/0/x as suggested by you. But still doesn't work. I have uploaded my entire running-config please have a look maybe you will see something I have missed. You can see it in the question. Jan 6, 2016 at 16:15
