I understand that when we have a on-premises controller, the 802.11 MAC functionality is split between Access Points and the physical controller device. What happens when we are using cloud-controlled access points for example Cisco Meraki? Do they implement the split-MAC architecture? Or Cloud controller is only used for configuration? And lastly, what is the advantage of split-MAC architecture?
