I am working on network systems. There's something I want to talk to you about. I started my research with the question of how a device learns the MAC address of another device. As far as I understand, this process is done by sending an ARP message to the device whose MAC address is to be learned. The ARP protocol is used to translate IP addresses and MAC addresses. So, first of all, I think the IP address of the device whose MAC address is being queried should be known. My question is; How does a device learn the IP address of another device? Thank you very much for your interest in advance. Kind regards,

  • ARP is only used by IPv4. IPv6 uses NDP instead.
