The OSI layer-1 is the physical layer which is how the actual "bits on the wire" get transferred from one device to another. It includes multiple technologies such as coax, fiber, UTP, radio, etc.
This layer is the bottom-most layer in the OSI model, and any network communication eventually crosses a layer-1 link.
