Jul 12, 2018 at 16:16 comment added user3559338 We initially thought a simple Layer 1 Network Hub would have been suitable for the task, with a single Hub for each connection and controlling the power supply of the Hub with a relay. However Layer 1 Hubs are very difficult to find and almost all of them are actually mislabelled switches. In the end we have went with a solution I didn't initially consider, Media Converters. You can buy a standard 100 media converter and multimode cable for around £50 and we can manage the power supply of these via a relay. It seems overkill for a simple cable but after labour costs works out better.

Jul 9, 2018 at 16:01 comment added Eddie Just a quick point about your #1. If you used an intermediate switch between the student's switch and student's PC, the student's switch will still see the MAC address of the PC out the port they are expecting. This article will explain the ins and outs of how MAC address tables are populated. If your intermediate switch is sending out CDP/STP/etc type frames, then the student switch will likely see intermediate switch's MAC in its table along with the student's PC's MAC as well.
